Mr. Anand Sharma – former Union Cabinet Minister is a Parliamentarian, Law and Policy maker with decades of rich experience.
A lawyer by training and profession, Anand Sharma enrolled as Advocate in 1977 with the Bar Council of Himachal Pradesh, Shimla. He practiced at District Courts, Shimla, Himachal High Court and Supreme Court.
A member of the Supreme Court Bar Association since 1989, he also worked as a Solicitor and legal consultant to Indian and Foreign corporate entities before joining the Union Council of Ministers in January, 2006.
Mr. Sharma held diverse portfolios in the Union Council of Ministers: served as Union State Minister of External Affairs (2006-09), Cabinet Minister of Commerce and Industry (2009-14). Also held the additional charge of Minister of Textiles and Minister of Information and Broadcasting.Actively associated in negotiating the historic Indo-US Nuclear Cooperation Agreement 2008 and in building Global consensus for an India specific waiver at the NSG.As Minister responsible for National Investment Policy, he piloted the opening of FDI in Defence, Power, Civil Aviation – Airlines, Tele-communication, Multi Brand retail and 100% in Single Brand retail.
Took major initiatives to accelerate Manufacturing and anchored India’s first National Manufacturing Policy (NMP) in 2011.He gave a forward-looking Foreign Trade Policy and India’s merchandise exports doubled during 2009–2014.During his tenure, India signed Trade and Investment agreements with major partner countries; ASEAN, Japan, South Korea and Malaysia. Also, launched negotiations with Australia, EU, New Zealand & RCEP (East Asia Summit Countries).He led the Indian Delegation to the IXth WTO Ministerial Meeting in Bali in 2013, which resulted in the first ever Trade Agreements since the establishment of the WTO in 1995.His notable contribution was globally acknowledged.
He has delivered lectures in major World Universities,Global Think Tanks,Economic and Strategic Affairs Institutes, across the world (List enclosed).As India’s Economy Minister, he Co-chaired Joint Commissions with strategic partner countries.Mr. Anand Sharma has a sound comprehension of Trade and Investment Policy and regulatory regimes.Well conversant with constitutional and legislative affairs. Mr. Anand Sharma has made an acknowledged contribution to law making.After demitting office as Deputy Leader of Opposition Mr. Sharma has resumed active law practice and established Law Chambers. Seven lawyers with experience ranging from 2 to 20 years in diverse fields of laws are full time associates.
